His father, Chandra Shekhar Bhagat, held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army, and his mother, Kusum Bhagat, worked as a scientist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. Chetan attended the Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan. During his school years, around the age of 15, he was an average student. However, it was during this time that his passion for writing took root.
