Udit Narayan began his Bollywood singing career in 1980 when music director Rajesh Roshan noticed him. He continued singing for various films, including a duet with Lata Mangeshkar in Bade Dil Wala (1983) and another with Kishore Kumar in Kehdo Pyar Hai.

A big moment in his career came in 1988 when Anand–Milind gave him the opportunity to sing all the songs for the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, alongside Alka Yagnik.
